Temple in the Trees
A poem.
I'm not against church buildings or the people that attend them. After all, this is my heritage. But these days, it is more common for me to encounter Jesus amid the trees.
A Temple of Trees
I felt a twinge of guilt
As I walked out the door
I left my kids behind
Shrouded by words and arms
Of humans who care
They'd be safe there
It was just me
Who wouldn't be
I left the church building
As I sought for the Sacred One
Exchanging walls for a glen
Secured between sky and earth
A temple built of trees
Clap joyfully in the breeze
This holy house
Is incorruptible
I felt the stillness settle in
As I perched on the rugged bench
I nested cozily amid the grove
Surrounded by leaves and stream
Hear the contentment in nature's sighs
Marvel at the heavy wooded lines
A deeply spiritual
Sabbath for my soul
I basked in the solitude
As my facade fractured and fell off
I trusted you've been remaking me tov
Searched inside by Wind and Breath
Reminded that I'm seen
Retold that I'm free
Cracked bones reset
Poisoned marrow healed
I wound my way back
As my cup brimmed with joy
I carried the forest calm with me
Strengthened deep by peace and light
I snuck inside the building
Silencing the birds singing
And told my children
Where else we’d find God
